Do's and Don'ts for promoting a Healthy Community

7/24/2020

Shalom everyone,  this is a excerpt from a book called "Truth Verses Man's Religious Systems" by our friend and Brother Terry W. McHenry. Enjoy!
  1. Be a giver, not a taker.
  2. Think community first, others next, and yourself last.
  3. Be a part of community building, not a part of community destruction (i.e., be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem).
  4. Recognize we are each a work in progress, at different stages. We each receive, and wrestle with, the revelation of our Hebraic roots at different times, and in different ways.
  5. Be humble, and not right for right's sake. No one has all the answers.
  6. Value your brother or sister in Messiah for what you can mutually learn together, and then practice hand in hand, to become more Messiah like. We need each other to mature in our walk. Realize differing perspectives can actually be healthy in a learning environment. They nurture growth–so long as they are dealt with correctly.
  7. A healthy community is a training ground, not simply a social gathering, not a forum to impress others.
  8. Be committed and sincere in your walk, not simply partially engaged.
  9. Be prideless in what you know, not prideful of what you know. Remember: understanding and wisdom are required for life application of Elohim's instructions.
  10. Knowledge without understanding is at best dangerous, at worst it can become a cancer within a community setting.
  11. Seek understanding for wisdom, not knowledge for power.
  12. Be respectful of others, and considerate, merciful, compassionate, edifying, forgiving, caring, and humble.
  13. Be loving toward others, not lording over others (Remember 1 Cor. 13).
  14. Be aware at times we all make mistakes, or miss-speak, or miss-judge, or offend others. Be prepared and open for the Holy Spirit to correct you, and to repent and do teshuva.
  15. Be aware that wounded, damaged, or hurting people often tend to wound, damage, or hurt other people. Satan often uses the wounded as vessels for his deceptions and evil intentions. We must be sensitive, loving, and compassionate but cautious that we don't get pulled down, either individually or corporately.
  16. Remember that the enemy (Satan) hates biblical community, and will do anything or use anyone to destroy it.
  17. Don't engage in L'shon Harah (the evil tongue), and be conscious of anyone who attempts to engage you in it.
  18. Look around and be sensitive to what needs to be done to work together as community. Pitch in and help, for example, with setup and cleanup.
  19. Realize we can only change ourselves. Whereas, the Holy Spirit can change us all, but it will be in His timing and manner, and done with infinitely more wisdom than we possess.
  20. Informed study of the Scriptures is a wonderful and fulfilling pursuit for gaining deeper truths Elohim desires for us to see in his Word. However, there is an inherent danger in the wonderment and enthusiasm of learning these deeper truths–Pride. And pride of course is a sin, as Scripture clearly informs us.

In Conclusion
Prayerfully ask yourself the following questions:
  1. Do you desire to be a part of a healthy community, grounded in Elohim's Word?
  2. Are you willing to commit to this community by contributing your part in building a healthy community?
  3. Are you aware that from time-to-time we will be tested as a community; will we pass the testing?

The Hebrew Roots Dichotomy

8/14/2018

by Ken Rank

The Hebrew Roots Movement might very well stand as one of the greatest examples to date of how man can take something intended as a blessing from God and turn it into a destructive force.

The Bible offers many contrasts through which God is able to declare His will for His people. This dichotomy is one way that God can give cause for man to turn from his fleshly desires toward living a more righteous life that is pleasing to his Creator. One of the more obvious examples is found in Deuteronomy 30:19 which states: “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” (NKJV) Polar opposites placed before us from which we are able to choose between a path that leads to God’s blessing, or a path that leads away from it.

Christianity as an entity has been quite dichotomous throughout its history. I remember during one of the very first sermons I attended before my adult baptism that the pastor seemed concerned about those Christians who “were saints on Sunday and lived liked hell the rest of the week.” But traits like hypocrisy are easy enough to spot and hypocrisy is certainly not confined to Christianity. Throughout the gospels we read Yeshua’s rebukes toward certain Pharisees who honored God with their lips but denied Him with their actions. Or even others who told the laypeople to do one thing while they themselves went and did another. As one who studies people and how they interact with their surroundings, I sadly conclude that hypocrisy is a trait that all of humanity, for one reason or another, is constantly in battle with. Consider Yeshua’s words in Matthew 7:5, “Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” I don’t know of one saint who hasn’t, at some point, forgotten to remove a plank from their own eye before trying to correct another.

Happy Hanukkah 2017!

Shalom Torah walkers. We kicked off Hanukkah over at Kevin's home in Rancho Bernardo and had a great time. Check out some of the pictures and video below. We look forward to our group meeting this coming Shabbat in Spring Valley.

Hanukkah is a time of year that we can see the power of Yah working in our lives when we put that line in the sand and say no further, we will not conform to this world's ways. We are going to follow the commandments of our creator no matter the consequences.
Picture
1 Maccabees 1:41-49

41 Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people, 42 and that all should give up their particular customs. 43 All the Gentiles accepted the command of the king. Many even from Israel gladly adopted his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the Sabbath. 44 And the king sent letters by messengers to Jerusalem and the towns of Judah; he directed them to follow customs strange to the land, 45 to forbid burnt offerings and sacrifices and drink offerings in the sanctuary, to profane Sabbaths and festivals, 46 to defile the sanctuary and the priests, 47 to build altars and sacred precincts and shrines for idols, to sacrifice swine and other unclean animals, 48 and to leave their sons uncircumcised. They were to make themselves abominable by everything unclean and profane, 49 so that they would forget the law and change all the ordinances. 50 He added, “And whoever does not obey the command of the king shall die.”

We can see from the above passage what was targeted to erase the faith of Yah:

1) Forbid sacrifices to Yah
2) Profane Sabbaths and festivals
3) Defile the sanctuary and priests
4) Build idols
5) Sacrifice swine & unclean animals
6) Leave their sons uncircumcised
7) Eat unclean animals
8) Forget the Torah

Little did Antiochus Epiphanes know that hundreds of years later the Catholic church would accomplish all the above. If you look at this list you can see that this is basically the main doctrine of that church and her daughters. In main line Christianity the Sabbath and the festivals are all but forgotten, Catholic "priests" are taken from just anyone out of the land instead of the sons of Aaron, idol building is rampant, swine and unclean animals are the center of religious holiday feasts, circumcision is ignored, and the Torah is ridiculed if it is even acknowledged at all.

We know that the Father blesses us for obedience (Deuteronomy 28).
We must continue on the path of life that the Father has laid out for us, but it is so easy to want to slip back into conformity with Satan's world, to take the easy way out, to compromise our integrity. When we feel the pressure to abandon the ways of the most high, be it from our work or our family or our friends. Do we have the resolve within ourselves to say "no", to tell this world that we will not be like it, we are going to follow our Master. What a great example of faith we have from the Maccabees. May all of us who follow the commandments of Elohim and the testimony of Yeshua  have such faith and determination.

Love and Unity in the Body

Shalom everyone, we had a great time at our first monthly San Diego Shabbat Meeting last Shabbat. It was a joy to visit with everyone. During this meeting I gave a teaching about Love and Unity in the Body and I wanted to post it here for anyone who might have missed it or wanted a copy. It covers how our pride and emotions can get in the way of the unity in the body of Messiah and the scriptures that deal with this issue. We all need to step back from time to time and realize that this walk isn't about us and our egos it is about Yah and his kingdom. May this teaching bless you in your walk.

Example of Our Weekly Agenda

6/5/2017

Shalom brothers and sisters,

I thought I would put up an example of what we do on a weekly basis as part of our Sabbath service to give you an idea of what to expect if you happen to be in our area and want to fellowship. Also, I though it would be beneficial for someone who is unable to attend and would either like to follow along or start a fellowship in their area. We follow the Parashah reading schedule and the companion scriptures and always end up with great conversations doing so. You can find a link to the schedule here. I believe that Yah is raising up his people in this time and is bringing them back to small home fellowships where everyone can discuss Torah together and grow together, instead of sitting silent is a building being told what to think.
We are pretty fast and loose with the times on this agenda, but it helps to have some sort of structure to keep things moving and a motivation to move on (there are a lot of rabbits on them trails). Everything is pretty static on this agenda. Songs are based on whatever we are in the mood for, psalms we are just progressing by one each week, and we read the Shema each week and  somehow always have a good conversation about it. The Torah portion changes each week according to the schedule. The weekly discussion topics are based on conversations we had the previous week that we wanted to get more information on or based on upcoming feast days or anything I am particularly interested in that week. A lot of the time it is just a printed article that has some good information. We close with the reading of the priests' blessing, another song, and a closing prayer.

When we are done I feel like we have accomplished something, it feels like a complete three course meal. You might be wondering at the length of time our meeting takes, at three and a half hours it is a lot of fellowship. I put in an intermission for food and discussion which helps break it up; but after you have been doing the Sabbath for some time, really, what else do you have to do on this day? Things that fill up my Shabbat are a blessing, especially when you have great people to fellowship with.

I hope this information blesses you and helps you with your walk.
